“Life is either a Daring Adventure or Nothing.” -Helen Keller
Welcome to Dailey Adventurers! We are Jake & Valerie Dailey, Adventurers from the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Dailey Adventurers started in 2014 as a way for us to document our travels. Neither of us really travelled when we were younger, but when I (Valerie) was bitten by the travel bug in 2013 I got this insatiable desire to see as much of the world as possible. We have traveled to 15 countries since 2014, while maintaining jobs and life here at home in Washington State.
As the years have passed my wanderlust has not weakened, and if anything I am more hungry to see as much of the world as I can. Over the years though, other passions have grown for both of us. Namely, living a more simple and sustainable lifestyle. We had the typical American lifestyle; we both had new cars, bought a 2,100 sq. ft house, had a few credit cards and worked full time jobs. The only time I really felt happy and free though was when we were on a trip. It became clear that our lifestyle at home was not bring either of us happiness, and was only weighing us down.
Living Small: We began to change our life by renovating and selling our house, getting rid of a lot of our belongings and moving to the rural countryside. We now live in a 750 sq. foot house on 6 acres, and honestly at times the 750 sq. feet still feels too big. Our plans for the future is to continue to minimize. Sell our stuff we don’t need or use and even downgrade to a smaller house at some point.
Self Sustainability: Jakes big passion is permaculture, which defined as, “the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient.” It is growing food in a way that is more than gardening. With the use of hugelkultur we are able to grow food while also improving the soil and air quality, thereby helping the environment. Another benefit of growing our own food is we are decreasing our cost of living. The goal is to be able to work less and spend our money on adventures and making memories.
Micro-farm: In addition to our extensive gardening, we are in the process of creating a micro-farm. While we want to have a veggie-heavy diet, the truth is neither of us are interested in becoming vegetarian. We want to eat meat in as humane way as possible though, and if you’ve seen Food, Inc. then you know that the animal industry is horrible in the way it treats animals. Our philosophy is “one bad day” when it comes to our critters. We want our animals to have as happy of a life as possible, even if in the end they have one bad day and become our food.
Our farm has extended to include our 2 dogs (Daisy & Huckleberry), 2 cats (Rogue and Bandit), chickens and rabbits. In the near future we also hope to add milk goats, Highlander coos (cows), Tamworth pigs, Angora rabbits (for their fur), and perhaps turkeys.
Travel: We are going to continue to travel as much as possible. At the minimum we hope to have 2 big trips a year (2-3 weeks each) as well as shorter trips throughout the year. In the summer months we intend to do as much hiking as possible in the PNW, including overnight and multi-day hikes. I might be biased, but I feel like we live in one of the best places in the world. It is so beautiful here and there is so much more for us to explore!
Hi! I am Valerie Dailey. I am the creator, blogger and photographer for Dailey Adventurers. I love writing and over the past 3 years have enjoyed learning the art of creating a website. Photography continues to be a growing passion of mine. I shoot with a Canon EOS Rebel T6i Digital SLR and record video with my GoPro HERO4 Silver.
Country Count -> I have been to 17 countries. (USA, Canada, Mexico, Uganda, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Iceland, Italy, Vatican City, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, Switzerland, United Kingdom (Scotland) )
Favorite Country -> Thailand and Iceland are tied. I love Iceland for the wild beauty and Thailand for the kind people, amazing food and gorgeous beaches.
Favorite Food -> Thai food! I could eat Pad Thai or cashew chicken any day.
Most Adventurous Thing I’ve Done -> I had never been on a plane, so a couple weeks after my 22nd birthday I jumped in with both feet and decided to take a flying lesson. Taking off for that first time was the most exhilarating moment of my life! I continue to have a love for flying and would love to get my private pilot license some day.
Day Job -> I am an ICU nurse. I love what I do and my schedule is adaptable to allow time off for travel. Nursing is intense, even more so in the Intensive Care Unit. It is challenging, but very rewarding.
Dream Trip -> I literally want to travel everywhere. There’s not a place (aside from war zones) that I would say no to. My dream trip though would be an Overland tour in Africa. I spent 2 weeks in Uganda on a medical mission trip, but it was just a small taste of what Africa offers and I can’t wait to return!
Favorite Quote -> I have many, but this one is particularly inspiring right now.
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” – Howard Thurman
